About Vecellio & Grogan

Vecellio & Grogan is a leading heavy/highway, bridge and structures contractor operating in the mid-Atlantic and southeast United States, and beyond. Founded in 1938 in Beckley, WV, Vecellio & Grogan is a fourth-generation, family-owned and operated business. It is the flagship company of Vecellio Group, Inc., a Top 400 Contractor with operations in heavy/highway, mining, and energy services and products.

More Than 120 Years Of History

The company’s roots go back to 1900, when Enrico Vecellio began a masonry contracting business in West Virginia. He built a reputation for excellence in workmanship and professional integrity. He soon entered the emerging road-building industry and became one of its earliest success stories.

Enrico’s son, Leo Vecellio, grew up around road construction, earned a civil engineering degree and in the 1930s went to work for his father’s road construction business. Also joining his father’s business was Gene Grogan, who married Leo’s sister, Erma Vecellio Grogan. Erma handled much of the company’s administrative work.

Second Generation — Building his own company

Having grown up around the business, Leo enjoyed working with his father, but he had a driving vision to build his own company. They talked it over and in 1938, a new company, Vecellio & Grogan, was formed. Enrico provided start-up assistance and executive guidance, while Leo and Gene handled the bulk of estimating and project management. Erma provided administrative assistance for the new venture.

Never one to shy away from a difficult assignment, Leo set a high standard at Vecellio & Grogan that follows to this day. The company became well-known for its heavy/highway contracting expertise, especially under tough-job, high-production conditions.

The company grew over the years, expanding beyond its home state into other mid-Atlantic states and even into other fields. During the 1960’s, V&G was involved as much in coal-mining as it was in earth-moving and road construction. Reclamation work also became a company specialty.

Third Generation — Substantial growth phase

In 1973, third-generation contractor Leo Vecellio Jr. joined Vecellio & Grogan. Like his father before him, Leo Vecellio Jr. had grown up in the family business, studied civil engineering in college and served in the U.S. military. He joined Vecellio & Grogan with civil engineering degrees from Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech, and with significant international project management experience gained as an officer in the U.S Air Force.

As Leo Vecellio Jr. shouldered a growing share of the executive workload, V&G began branching out into more diverse economic and geographic regions, even adding bridge-building to its range of services. When opportunities arose in Florida, Leo Jr. took the lead and a number of new operations were established, propelling substantial business growth over the next several decades.

From excavation, grading and structure work, to asphalt manufacturing and paving, to aggregates production — the operations grew considerably and were eventually reorganized as Vecellio Group, Inc., with a continued emphasis on safety and environmental awareness in all aspects of the work.

The Vecellio Group is privately owned by Leo A. Vecellio, Jr., his wife, Kathryn, and sons Christopher, left, and Michael, right.
