Mine Site Work Includes Reclamation, Excavation and Overburden Removal

At Buck Lilly Surface Mine in Rupert, WV, Vecellio & Grogan is performing mine reclamation and overburden removal for Greenbrier Smokeless Mining.

The reclamation work involves consolidating coal refuse and encapsulating it behind a compacted earth wall up to 100-ft. high and 40-ft. thick. The refuse was left by a former operation in the 1970s. A top layer of earth will seal the refuse, while at the bottom a wick drain will channel any water runoff — although none is expected — to a treatment pond.

To get material for the encapsulation work, V&G crews are drilling, blasting and removing shot rock from another area of the property, in the process uncovering new seams for future mining.

The company is also performing excavation and overburden removal for a surface coal mine in Virgie, KY, for Viking Acquisition Group.

The company is licensed or prequalified in 12 states throughout the mid-Atlantic and beyond:

  • ALABAMA
  • FLORIDA
  • GEORGIA
  • KENTUCKY
  • MARYLAND
  • NORTH CAROLINA
  • OHIO
  • PENNSYLVANIA
  • SOUTH CAROLINA
  • TENNESSEE
  • VIRGINIA
  • WEST VIRGINIA
